Secure Courtyard Memory Garden
The Christopher House is a 156-bed not-for-profit care center that provides comprehensive continuum of care including subacute, rehabilitation, long term, and respite care. An unused portion of the grounds adjacent to the 41-bed Alzheimer unit was redesigned as a secure courtyard to create a memory garden. The garden, designed as a walking loop around a large green and a gathering place sized for outdoor music and family events, augments recreational activities previously limited by a small and confined porch. Privacy for patient room windows was maintained via curved planters, walls, and plantings.
The construction used readily available materials designed for installation by staff without the use of heavy machinery, and with little disturbance to the adjacent patient rooms.
