“The mission of South Cove Manor (SCM) is to provide individualized nursing and rehabilitative care that celebrates Chinese cultural values.” The building’s design reflects that mission and is based on the traditional Chinese Siheyuan “courtyard” small house model of family and communal space, connection with the community and Chinese imagery and history.
141 residents live on three floors; each floor’s nursing unit is subdivided into two smaller “courtyards”. The nursing units’ interior open plan design is based on resident centered care models that enhance resident experience of engaged living and staff interaction, by reducing barriers and creating spaces
that encourage independence, mobility, and personal relationships.
Resident rooms open onto the central “courtyard” activity/dining area, with seating options and a kitchenette.
This model is in stark contrast to the 30-year old original SCM double-loaded corridor building that was planned with a medical care model.
