RENOVATION

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Boston Medical Center

New location and design for the NICU giving families a mix of private space and flexibile space for intake/observation

The 21 bed NICU replaces an older “bullpen” arrangement of open bays, with a mix of three quad group spaces and nine private family rooms, to offer the variety of care options now recommended for neonates.  The quad spaces serve as intake/observation areas to assess the condition of the infants when they first arrive in the NICU, and can also can accommodate twins and triplets when needed.  The private rooms feature family support zones to the rear that support parents rooming in with the infant overnight.  Circadian lighting controls, extensive acoustic treatment and higher levels of humidification are designed to provide a safe, nurturing environment.
