Renovation

Lobby, Mezzanine, and Cafeteria

Boston Medical Center

Linking three main campus lobbies

One of the “enabling projects” of the BMC campus master plan was the creation of a new public image and brand with the redesign of the Yawkey Building Lobby, 1st floor Ambulatory Departments, and Mezzanine Level Cafeteria, along with the Menino Pavilion Lobby.

This project reorganized circulation and improved wayfinding by linking three of the four main campus lobbies. It balanced BMC’s heavy outpatient traffic through the Yawkey and Menino Lobbies with a connecting public corridor, and enhanced the Menino Lobby with a new 24/7 Coffee/Gift Shop and Family Waiting room that helped to revitalize the public realm of the campus.

The Yawkey Lobby was changed by relocating mezzanine level offices and opening up the entire lobby to the new mezzanine level cafeteria. The result is a doubling of the Yawkey Lobby spatially, more natural light and a new social gathering and waiting area readily accessible from the street.
